Ali Alnaser is a professor in Physics and Head of the Physics Department in the American University of Sharjah (AUS) –UAE. He is also the interim Director of the Materials Science and Engineering Research Institute at AUS. Prior to joining AUS, Dr. Alnaser worked as research fellow at Kansas State University in the US and he has been a visiting professor at Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany; King Saud University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; and the Advanced Laser Light Source in Canada.

Dr. Alnaser’s research interests are centered around the use of ultra-short super intense lasers in probing and manipulating experimentally the structure of matter on extremely short time scales. He has co-supervised the research work of master’s and PhD students in the US, Canada and Germany.

He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles in leading science journals, such as those of Nature Publishing Group, American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics; and co-authored numerous papers at regional and international conferences. Dr. Alnaser serves as a member of the international advisory board, editor, and referee for journals published by the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics in UK. He is the recipient of the All-University Graduate Research and Creative Scholar, the George E. Bradley Award, and the distinguished Alumni Award from Western Michigan University. In 2011, he received the Distinguished Arab Scholar Award from the State of Kuwait.



Intense Femtosecond Lasers: A versatile tool to probe matter and fabricate it

The field of intense ultrafast lasers interacting with matter is now widely recognized as one of the most rapidly growing research areas as well as one of the most promising for myriad applications. Intense ultrafast lasers are being employed in diverse areas of research including femtochemistry and femtobiology, time-resolved spectroscopy and microscopy and high-precision materials processing.

In this talk, I will show how we can utilize in our laboratories at the American University of Sharjah state- of-the-art femtosecond laser sources to probe and manipulate matter on ultrashort time and spatial scales of materials in various areas of fundamental and applied research.
